Action Against Poverty

UN International Day for The Eradication of Poverty in Glasgow
Glasgow's annual rally and act of remembrance for all those affected by poverty.
When
Oct 17, 2008
Where
George Square, Glasgow

Please join us if you can and tell others! - This is for everyone, for:

In 2014, Glasgow will be the proud Host City for the Commonwealth Games. Already, politicians and people are asking "what will be the lasting legacy of these games – especially for the people of the East End?"

Every year since 1992, a group supporting people living in poverty in Glasgow has organised a rally in George Square on 17 October. This year, the event will focus particularly on the legacy of the Games, and on the seven indicators of the poverty that still, shockingly, devastate the lives of so many in our city:

Poverty of Inadequate Income
Poverty of Unemployment
Poverty of Poor Health
Poverty of Poor Education
Poverty of Inadequate Access to Services
Poverty of Poor Housing
Poverty of Fear of Crime

Many of us associate poverty with not having enough money to make ends meet. We will hear real life stories from those who live with or have experienced the effect of grinding poverty that still cripples the lives of our fellow citizens in Glasgow today, and we will remember those in other countries around the globe whose human rights are violated by the scandal of poverty.
This event is supported by:

The Church of Scotland’s Presbytery of Glasgow
The Archdiocese of Glasgow’s Justice & Peace Commission
Faith in Community Scotland
Church Action on Poverty
The Iona Community
The Poverty Alliance
ATD Fourth World

The story of "The Stone"

17 October 1987: Paris Brought together by ATD Fourth World, 100,000 people from around the world gathered at the Plaza of Human Rights and Liberties, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, to inaugurate a Commemorative Stone in honour of the Victims of Extreme Poverty in every part of the globe.

Few monuments are erected in honour of poor people and their courage. Often buried without a headstone, slums erased from maps, stories not recorded in books – the Stone was meant to go some way to filling that void. Every year since then, people have gathered on 17 October to stand in solidarity, and to state unequivocally that “poverty is neither inevitable nor acceptable.”
In 1992, the United Nations declared 17 October the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

17 October 1999: Glasgow, after years of campaigning by Glasgow Braendam Link, a Commemorative Stone, carved in granite and similar to the one in Paris, was unveiled in George Square. It was laid in earth brought from Paris (the Headquarters of ATD Fourth World), Stirling (from the grounds of Braendam Family House), and Glasgow (from the back court of the tenement base of Glasgow Braendam Link).

In George Square, on 17 October every year since, a rally has been held, with music, drama, dancing and always at the heart, people living in poverty standing up and telling their stories.
The Stone stands as a permanent reminder that in Glasgow, as in so many parts of the world, “poverty is neither inevitable nor acceptable”.

Getting Into the Festive Spirit

Well it most certainly feels like summer is over - I had to scrape the car this morning and think it is about time to put on the thermals and quilted coat again - having said that did we have a summer at all this year?
Got lots of festive scented candle goodies in the seasonal page and "yes" the picture above is a 100% paraffin wax candle and "no" you cannot eat it unless you fancy a pretty big dental bill!!!
We have got a huge range of scents including a fairly hefty Christmas Scent selection - Christmas Pudding Scent and Mince Pie Scent are just two of the new range of scents we have received in this month and they are mouthwateringly good.

Spooky Spooky Halloween

Well the year seems to be running away with me lately - where has the time gone and when was I on holiday again???

With Halloween just around the corner decided to make some lovely little cup cake candles with spooky hand painted pumpkins on them. They are really very cute actually and not scary at all would make an ideal gift to take along to any Halloween Party this year.

Back in the Swing of Things

Well it has been a while but after our fantastic holiday in South Africa I had a months worth of orders waiting for me when I got home - so it has been nose to the grind stone for me.

You can see more of our holiday pics here.

What a fantastic time we all had. The Kruger National Park is out of this world. It is roughly the size of Scotland and all the animals are free to wander about as nature intended. It is the humans who need to be caged in at night. We stayed in a fantastic lodge and it is unbelievable how bright the stars are when there is absolutely no street lighting for hundreds of miles around!!!

We ate and drank far too much of course (it wouldn't have been a holiday if we didn't!!) hubby even tried snails but I'm not brave enough to try that I'm afraid.

Anyway back to reality. Thoughts are now turning to the winter months and we will be getting in a batch of new winter scents soon - will post and let you know when they have all been tested. I am developing a new range of personalised wedding favours at the moment and hopefully will have these on soon.

The Fresh Smell of Roses

Another new addition to my ever expanding candle range.

These are lovely you get two and they are roughly 3 inches wide and 1.5 inches high. Inspiration from the garden has obviously been taken when making these. They would make lovely gifts but would also be ideal as wedding favors for that summer wedding.

Hurricane Candles

It has been a very busy month this month. The most popular candles that I have been asked for have been my personalised hurricane candles. Really what hurricane candles are is a wax shell with a tealight popped into the bottom of the shell. This means that the actual hurricane never burns but is lit up with a lovely glow from the inside.

These candles are personalised with any image wanted. The picutre is actually set within the wax shell itself (not just stuck onto the front) and are excellent keepsakes.

The hurricane above was made for one of the lady's on the forum to give to both grans and I think the photo I was given is absolutely gorgeous.

And their Back!!!

Back to School at last - 2 whole weeks has seemed like 2 years trying to keep the kids amused. Did eventually get to see the Spiderwick Chronicles and it was surprisingly good - my 15 year old son even liked it - and for all of us who have teenagers you know how difficult it is to get a teenager to like something.

Anyhoo - I can actually use the computer again instead of having to fight my way in!!!

I have another load of scents due to arrive soon so as soon as I have tested them will put them onto the site - I have some absolutely fantastic fragrances that I will add to my ever increasing list of scents - I think I am sitting at around 100 scents.

Another week commences - back on with work!!!

Easter Holidays

Well that's it the schools in Scotland have finally finished for the 2 week Easter holiday's. Now comes the age old dilema - what do you do to keep the kids amused.

They have only been on holiday for 1 day and already all I am hearing is "mum I'm bored, there's nothing to do!!" I think I will take them to the cinema to see the Spiderwick Chronicles - so there's one day down - 13 left to go!!

Forever Candles Family

I have added another selection to the popular Forever Candles range. I have made three forever candles in small, medium and large and used a candle plate with some lovely pebbles to set it all off. This set looks fantastic and will last forever (as the name suggests). Just pop a tea light into the handy dandy tea light holders in the top of the candle and change these whenever they are finished. You get three scented tea lights with every set in colours to match your candle to start you off.

Easter Egg Candles

I have had this little mould for absolutely ages and I have made and sold quite a few but this is the first time I have put them onto my web pages. They are really cute, slightly bigger than a hens eggs but would still sit snuggley into an egg cup.
They are made from Paraffin Wax and can be scented with any scent from my range. I currently have a few chocolate ones - the good old favourite chocholate chip cookie, chocolate orange and after dinner mint - good enough to eat.

New Soy Candles

Well as promised I have made a new range of Soy Wax candles. I have container candles, wax melts and votives. I am in the process of testing a range of Soy Wax pillar candles and as soon as I am happy with them I will add them too.

Soy Wax is lovely and the best bit of all is as it is a totally natural product if you spill some hot wax you don't need to panic as it can be washed off with soap and water.
